“If every 8 year old in the world is taught meditation, we will eliminate violence from the world within one generation” - Dalai Lama
Here are 5 reasons why kids should learn meditation.
· Decrease hyper activeness :
Kids often lack in paying attention to the things which are being taught to them. This scenario is generally seen in school and the disruption of class begins with the non-attentive peers who cannot sit in one place for a long time. Attention Deficit/ Hyperactivity Disorder(ADHD) is mostly found in kids which show signs of distraction, restlessness, careless mistakes, interruption etc. It does not have a cure but can be controlled. In meditation, they are required to sit silently and deliberately be attentive and aware of themselves. This will take time but eventually help them become calmer. If kids learn how to meditate, they will be conscious of their actions, will be able to control them and will eventually decrease hyperactivity.
· Getting ready for Puberty:
Every adolescent child undergoes hormonal changes and might not react to it well. Mood swings are at its peak and the need to fit in the peer group is felt. They are highly affected by and influenced by things taking place around them. Meditation gives them a sense of prudence and keeps them strong to deal with the changes in their body as well as the society.
· Emotional Development :
As kids grow, their emotional maturity also starts increasing. They come across innumerable situations which might be hard on them for example loss of a loved one, peer pressure, self insecurity, etc. Coping up with such circumstances is difficult for children and can scar them for life. If they start meditating, kids can come to terms with these onslaughts better and can handle them in a more positive way. Meditation can also help kids to stabilise their frustration and irritability and teach them patience.
· Focus :
Meditation has consistently proven to improve focus and concentration. It increases the cognitive ability of the brain which also helps in solving critical situations. The grasping power is better at a younger age. Thus, when kids learn to meditate right from a tender age, their capacity of understanding increases, their perspectives widen and they can direct their energies to more important things.
· Social Skills :
The biggest challenge for kids is to be socially comfortable. Many children do not like getting a social exposure which is actually very important for their development. They are sometimes rude to their friends and family and can affect relationships. As kids start to meditate, their thoughts become pure and their perspectives change. This gives them a feeling of empathy at a younger age and this can help in improving their relations socially. Meditation helps them to be compassionate and learn to respect others as they themselves are filled with positive energies through meditation.
Meditation can be an extremely transformative experience for kids and will definitely help them in the long run. So make your child meditate and see how the small caterpillar turns into a beautiful butterfly and be able to acquire his inner freedom!
